Three Days, Three Boxes

I'm still holding up pretty well with my empties budget/no-buy and concentrating on finishing products I already own. *pats self on back* The only downside to buying less is fewer products to haul and review. I accumulated three beauty boxes/bags in three days and it almost felt like a haul. I figured an unboxing/haul only made sense...

Birchbox March 2015
I really like how Birchbox now has sample choice. Don't get me wrong, I love surprises but it's nice every now and then to be able to make a decision, too. This month, I chose It's a 10! Miracle Leave-in Product; this is my HG detangler and I figured I could use a travel size. I received a sample choice confirmation and spoiler email. I was a little disappointed my box featured totally different products. Birchbox informed they ran out of inventory. Bummer!

Products:
  • Benefit Watt's up! Highlighter
  • Derma E Evenly Radiant Brightening Day Creme SPF 15
  • Macadamia Nourishing Moisture Masque
  • Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo Powder Spray
  • Roloxin Light Revitalizing Facial Masque Treatment (set of 2)
I already owned/tried three of these products... that has never happened to me in the history of my Birchbox experience. (Nearly four years!) On the plus side, this is probably the highest value box I've ever received - $10 for over $50 worth of product. Impressive! I'm generally always pleased with my monthly Birchbox. Birchbox is a monthly subscription service that brings you new beauty products tailored to your personal profile. Sign up here. (referral link)

Walmart Beauty Box Spring 2015
The Walmart Beauty Box is a seasonal subscription box that cost $5. (There are only 4 boxes a year, $20 in total.)

Products:
  • Dove Go Fresh Mandarin & Tiare Flower Seed Body Wash (travel size)
  • Garnier Miracle Sleeping Cream (foil packet)
  • Lady Gaga Fame Fragrance (sample)
  • Maybelline Fit Me Matte & Poreless Foundation (foil packet)
  • Neutrogena Healthy Skin Boosters Facial Cleanser (White Tea & Vitamin E) (sample)
  • Nivea In-Shower Lotion (foil packet)
  • Rimmel Lash Accelerator Mascara (full size)
  • Schwarzkopf essence Ultime Omega Repair & Moisture Shampoo (travel size)
  • Schwarzkopf essence Ultime Omega Repair & Moisture Conditioner (travel size)
  • $14 in coupons
I'll admit I was a little confused when opening the box, nothing really screamed 'Hello spring!' to me. I'm generally always disappointed with fragrance vials - this one REALLY annoyed me since it came out 3 years ago!! (Subscription boxes normally showcase new fragrances.) However, I'm looking forward to trying everything else. The mascara alone retails for over $5.00. I'm guessing the value of this box is close to $20 plus $14 in coupons. I think this box is totally worth it if you're into drugstore products. Sign up here.

Whole Foods Beauty Bag
Whole Foods launched a beauty bag for beauty week. (It hit shelves March 21, 2015. This is not a subscription box. It is/was available in stores only.) The bag retailed for $18 and has a value of over $60! See more details here.

Products:
  • Acure Cell Stimulating Facial Mask
  • Derma E Microdermabrasion Scrub
  • Gabriel Mascara
  • Giovanni 2chic Blackberry & Coconut Milk Ultra-Repair Shampoo
  • Hello, Beauty Bag
  • Pacifica Eye Shadow Duo (or Lipstick)
  • Trilogy Vital Moisturizing Cream
  • $5 off coupon for any Biosil Product
I saw this bag was being released and knew I had to have it. Three vegan skincare products (& more!) for under $20? Yes, please! I've been eying a few Giovanni products, so that caught my eye too. I would've preferred the lipstick but my local store was only offering the eyeshadow. A more neutral color eyeshadow duo would've been nice, but otherwise no complaints! I'm happy the bag is 'plain'; I'll probably actually use it instead of storing it with the all of the obnoxious printed bags companies usually giveaway.

Jordana Easyliner for Lips in Rock n Rose

This is an oldy but goody. I keep coming back to this one. I've been loving matte lips lately. I've been wearing this on its own most of the month.

Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray
I've raved about this one too many times. It's part dry shampoo, part texturizing spray - 100% genius. It smells amazing. Just try. it. This product is making me want to try everything else from Oribe.

Parlor Moisturizing Sea Salt Spray
I received this in my Birchbox. This salt spray is super fine and light - not sticky and heavy, like other salt sprays I've tried in the past. It adds texture without a ton of product buildup... win-win.

Simple Cleansing Micellar Water
I FINALLY tried Bioderma - only a small decant. But I really liked it and I was curious how other micellar waters would compare. This was sort of an impulse buy. (It was on sale and I didn't read any reviews first.) I must I say I liked Bioderma better, but the Simple one comes pretty dang close. It's a super effective makeup remover without irritation or a scent.

Wet n Wild Lipstick in Bare it All (902c)
Again, I've been loving matte lips all-month. When I didn't wear the Jordana easy liner - I wore this. It's such a pretty, natural shade.

pump dispenser lid

A 'random' favorite is a storage solution! I FINALLY got my hands on the Up & Up nail polish dispenser. It has the pump dispenser lid, very similar to Zoya's Remove+. Using this huge bottle of Clinique Toner has been a hassle: it's heavy when it's full, I'm paranoid I'm going to spill it, and it doesn't even fit in my bathroom drawer. Taking off my makeup feels like such a chore sometimes; this dispenser has made my skin care routine more effective and effortless.

Empties #8

Onto another round of empties! See more information on the #100daysofempties challenge in my last empties post: Empties #7.

beauty empties

Empties:
Bath & Body Works French Lavender & Honey Shower Gel
This was a gift with purchase item. Bath & Body Works gels are great as both shower gel and bubble bath. I grew tired of this scent halfway through the bottle. I probably won't repurchase this scent.

Bath & Body Works Vampire Blood Plum PocketBac Hand Sanitizer
This is limited edition for Halloween; it's one of my favorite scents that I use year-round. I have a few back-ups on hand, but I would probably repurchase it again.

Bikini Zone After Shave Gel
This is a staple for me. The product is great for ingrown hairs and shaving irritation all over the body.

Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micelle Solution
(3oz decant) I've been wanting to try Bioderma for awhile. I received a 3oz decant in a swap package. This was an excellent, gentle makeup remover. It definitely lives up to the hype. I will probably purchase a big bottle once I use up all of my current makeup removers.

Clairol Herbal Essences Body Wash Body Burst
(travel size) I was unimpressed with this body wash. It didn't lather or foam nicely. The scent was just okay.

Clinique Lash Doubling Mascara
(deluxe sample) This mascara is just okay. I liked layering it with other mascaras. I always seem to get these samples in gift with purchase bags. I would use it again, but I probably won't purchase the full size.

Dove Refresh + Care Volume Dry Shampoo
This dry shampoo was just okay. The consistency was a little too heavy for my liking. The scent was nice. It came out clear, so that was a plus.

Dove Sensitive Skin Beauty Bar Soap
This is a holy grail product for me; I won't continue to rave.

E45 Cream
I heard a lot of good things about this cream. I used it has a face cream for a few weeks but then I noticed a lot of clogged pores. I used the remainder on super dry areas - like my elbows and feet. This was a decent body cream. I might repurchase it.

ELF Eyelash & Brow Wand Brush
This is a staple for me. These brushes just get covered in brow product and brow hair, it's easier to just replace it (for only $1) than to deep clean it. I buy a replacement every few months.

Gilchrist & Soames The London Collection Shower Gel
(Birchbox sample) This smelled and lathered just okay. I didn't find it very moisturizing. Overall, I was pretty unimpressed with this product.

Harvey Prince Liquidloofah Ageless Shower Gel
(Birchbox sample) This smelled nice - a little too floral for me. It lathered okay. The sample was tiny; I don't think it's worth the high price tag.

Jordana Best Lash Extreme Volumizing Mascara
This was a really nice, cheap (under $3!) mascara. It provided a lot of length and volume. I did notice some flaking toward the end of the tube. I will say avoid this in the heat or if you're a chef/bake a lot; I could literally feel my lashes melting getting things in and out of the oven. Otherwise, no complaints!

Juice Beauty Green Apple Peel Sensitive
(Birchbox sample) I used this once; the tingling sensation was too much for me to handle. My skin felt nice immediately after use but I didn't notice any longer term benefits.

Karma Naturals Nail Polish Remover
(Birchbox sample) This nail polish remover was effective, but it was a little too oily for my liking. I'll stick with Zoya Remove+!

Keims Peppermint & Macadamia Shampoo
(Birchbox sample) This smelled awesome - like a salon or spa. However, it didn't do a thing for my hair. I felt like it almost dried it out. I ended up using the remainder as a shaving gel.

Nivea A Touch of Happiness Shower Gel
(travel size) This was my HG shower gel in high school. I still like it, but I bet better products are out there.

Pantene Blowout Extend Dry Shampoo*
(travel size, voxbox freebie) When I received this, I immediately used it. It smelled nice and felt pretty light. A few days later, I was going to use it again and the nozzle broke. It seemed like it ran out of aerosol. It appears this is a common problem with this dry shampoo. I received this product complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes.

Pantene Full & Strong Shampoo & Conditioner*
(voxbox freebies) These smelled nice in the bottle. When I used them in the shower, the scent reminded me of bubble gum. (I don't like when products have food scents.)  The first week, my hair looked shiny and felt so smooth. About halfway through the bottles, I noticed a lot of scalp irritation - I had a lot of product build up. I'm probably going to pass these to my sisters. I received these products complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes.

Personna Twin Blades Razors (3)
I got a 10 pack of these for $1.00. I'm flying through Venus razors and looking for a cheaper alternative. At first, these were nice. On the third razor, I noticed a lot of shave bumps and a few ingrown hairs. I'll probably give away the remaining razors and switch back to my HG Venus razors.

Revlon Lip Butter in Pink Truffle
I have finished and repurchased this lip butter multiple times. This is such a great 'my lips but better' color. I don't need a mirror to apply it, so that's definitely a plus. This is probably my holy grail drugstore lipstick.

Swisspers Cotton Rounds (100ct)
This is both a staple and a holy grail product for me; I won't continue to rave.

Urban Decay Perversion Mascara
(sample) I was so unimpressed with this mascara. It made my lashes so flat and weighed down.

Vasanti Detox Facial Cleanser
(Birchbox sample) This was an effective facial cleanser. Although, I prefer Vasanti Brighten Up! over this.

Whish Shave Cream Acai Grapefruit
(Birchbox sample) This reminded me a lot of the EOS Shaving Cream. It was kind of moisturizing but I didn't feel like it was super effective for the price.

candles

Candles:
Better Homes Warm Rustic Woods Scented Wax Cubes (6 tarts)
I think this was a limited edition Christmas scent. I really liked this scent - really woodsy with a touch of men's cologne.

Glade Cashmere Woods Candle (2)
Another Woodsy scent - more female than the scent above. This is probably my favorite home scent for fall.

Glade Clean Linen Candle
One of my all-time favorite drugstore scents. It smells like fresh laundry.

Glade Lavender & Peach Blossom Candle
Surprisingly, I really liked this. I generally avoid food/floral scents, but I'm glad I tried this one. The peach and lavender really compliment each other without being overwhelming.

Starburst Candle
I got this at the Dollar Tree awhile ago. I'm pretty sure it was the watermelon scent but I no longer have the packaging. It smelled nice in the jar - like a Lip Smackers product. The jar had a pretty design. When lit, it had no scent at all. In my experience, the majority of Dollar Tree candles look pretty but very rarely have a strong fragrance.

Yankee Fluffy Towels Large Jar Candle
This is my favorite Yankee scent, another fresh laundry smell. I rarely purchase these because they're so pricey. On the plus side, they do last forever.

Totals:
#100daysofempties totals: I've completed 49 products in 59 days.
#oneemptyonedollar totals: $21.20 remains in my beauty budget.

BECCA Powder Highlighter in Opal
This highlight powder has been on my wishlist for a few months. Brad got it for me for Christmas and I haven't stopped using it since. It gives the most perfect sheen and isn't chalky at all.

FAGE Total 0% Raspberry Greek Yogurt
In general, I'm not a huge fan of yogurt but I know it has a lot of benefits. Most regular yogurt always contains too much sugar for my liking. I like plain greek yogurt with toppings (granola, fruit, etc.) but I can never eat a full container of yogurt before it goes bad. These single cups always on sale for $1.00 at Kroger. I decided to give them a try. I tried about five flavors and raspberry has been my favorite so far. I like how it's the perfect amount and the bendable cup is genius. I've been eating this and Sunchips for lunch most of the month.

KOR Aura Water Bottle
This was in the Birchbox 'Sweat the Small Stuff' gift set that I gave Brad for Christmas. This water bottle has been on my wishlist for over a year. So of course, I wanted it for myself. The design is so sleek. The mouth opening is a perfect fit and makes it easy to take big gulps without spilling water all over the place. The carry lid is an awesome touch too. I'm considering buying a second one and donating all of my other water bottles.

OPI My Paprika is Hotter Than Yours
This is a perfect orange-red shade. I think it would look great on all skin tones. I wore it most of the month.

Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray
I am so obsessed with this stuff. It's part dry shampoo, part texturizing spray, and has the best smell. I'm definitely buying a full size when this runs out. I'm looking forward to trying more Oribe products, too!

Empties #7

New Years Resolution/#100daysofempties
I'm the opposite of a hoarder when it comes to everything except for beauty products. I'm constantly selling or donating things - especially clothes. But when it comes to makeup, I never want to part with it and that means never using it in its entirety. This is probably for many reasons, but three come to mind: (1) Makeup never holds its value unless it's a rare or limited edition item - so it has no resale value. (2) High-end cosmetics are expensive. (For example, when I'm at the end of my $90 perfume, I should want to use it up. But I want to 'save' it for a special occasion. So I don't have to repurchase it.) (3) I hoard samples for when I 'travel' - I travel maybe 10 days of the year so you can see the dilemma. I'm sure there are other factors, but this three are the main things.

Needless to say, I'm drowning in cosmetics. I shouldn't have to buy mascara or shampoo for a year. A few months ago, I discovered @beautyempties on Instagram, the founder of #100daysofempties. Through her Instagram page and other users joining along, I really felt inspired to participate.

I decided my main New Years Resolutions would be to destash/quit hoarding beauty products and reduce the amount of money I spend on cosmetics. The goal of #100daysofempties is to finish 100 products in 100 days. Basically, one product a day for 100 days. To go along with that, @beautyempties also introduced a no-buy challenge: #oneemptyonedollar. For every empty you complete, no matter the cost of that empty, adds $1 to your beauty budget.

Every week or two, I will be sharing the products I used up on Instagram with a mini review. At the end of the month, I will post my normal Empties post here with all products I finished that month and a more in-depth review.

My ultimate goal is to finish 100 products by April 11th and spend no more than $100 on beauty products. I'm not a big fan of single-use foil packets, so reaching this date may be a bigger challenge for me. Even I don't reach the date, I plan to still complete 100 products on my own timeline.

Spending exclusions: I am not counting 'necessary' staples - like skincare items, hygiene items, etc in my beauty budget. I am not counting Birchbox or Walmart Beauty Box in my beauty budget, as I purchased these subscriptions last year. I am not counting candles in my beauty budget or 100 products since I categorize these as a 'home' expense, but I will still list them in my empties posts, since I've mentioned them in the past. Gift cards and Birchbox points do not count in my beauty budget.

Empties:
Anastasia Brow Wiz in Caramel
This is a holy grail product for me; I won't continue to rave. The fine tip makes filling in your brows so easy. On the downside,.003 oz for $21 is ridiculous; I'm hoping to find an alternative.

Blistex Medicated Lip Balm
This was my holy grail lip balm, but the dermatologist said stay away because it does more harm than good. I haven't noticed my lips getting any better or worse since I've stopped using it.

Caudalie Vinosource Sorbet
(sample) I think I got this in a Caudalie sample set. I really liked this at night time.  I'm contemplating buying the full size.

Clinique Take the Day off makeup remover
This is a holy grail product for me; I won't continue to rave.

Crest 3D White Luxe Glamorous White Toothpaste in Vibrant Mint
This is a holy grail product for me; I won't continue to rave. It doesn't tremendously help with whitening, but I really like the flavor.

Dial Crystal Breeze Antiperspirant & Deodorant
I used this until my UK Nivea deodorant arrived; I got tired of the scent halfway through. It worked pretty good; the scent just clashed with other products.

Dr. Jart + Pore Minimalist Black Charcoal Sheet Mask
I received this in my Birchbox. I'm a big fan of sheet masks. But I didn't really notice a difference after using this one. My face felt kind of sticky (you're not supposed to wash it off) after removing it.

Gillette Venus & Olay Razor Cartridge (2)
This is a holy grail product for me; I won't continue to rave.

Laura Geller GlamLASH Dramatic Volumizing Mascara
(sample) I really liked this, especially at the end when it thickened up a bit. I might purchase the full size.

Lierac Demaquillant Douceur
(sample) This is cleansing water, similar to Bioderma. I used this as an eye makeup remover, it was effective and didn't cause any irritation but I just prefer other removers.

Maybelline Dream Wonder Powder
(sample) I received this sample in my Walmart Beauty Box. I heard good things about this powder and was looking forward to trying it out. The color was too dark for me and I didn't really care for the consistency.

Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes (2)
(25 ct) This is a holy grail product for me; I won't continue to rave.

Nexxus Color Assure Conditioner
This was the only conditioner my roommate ever used. I found a $7 off coupon in a magazine and decided to give this a try. This smelled nice and was pretty moisturizing but it made no major difference in my hair. I probably won't repurchase it.

Pantene Aqua Light Clean Rinse Shampoo
I'm so happy to see this finally go. I purchased it on a whim because it was on clearance. I felt like it dried my hair out super bad. I will not be repurchasing.

Soap & Glory Hand Food
(travel size) This was the perfect purse size. This worked good and smelled great. I will probably repurchase in the future.

Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat
This is a holy grail product for me; I won't continue to rave.

Shu Umera Cleansing Oil Shampoo
(sample) This smelled nice but it made my hair feel kind of dried out.

Swisspers Cotton Rounds
(100 ct) Cotton rounds are a necessary staple for me. This brand is high-quality compared to others; I feel like I use less of these than generic ones because they don't rip.

Vasanti BrightenUp! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator
(sample) I really liked this exfoliant: I'm considering buying the full size with my Birchbox points!

candles

Candles:
Bath & Body Works Cardamom & Suede
(3-wick) I really liked this scent, I didn't realize it was a winter scent until it was too late... I should've stocked up! I hope it comes back around next year.

Bath & Body Works Cranberry Pear Bellini
(3-wick) This is my favorite Winter scent. I purchase one or two every year.

Bath & Body Works Merry Mistle Toe
(mini) I got this as a freebie a few years ago and kept forgetting to use it at Christmas. This is a good holiday scent. Mini candles are perfect for small bathrooms.

Ikea Tindra
(single wick) This was one of Brad's candles. I didn't really care for the scent. The candle burned unevenly, too. I wasn't impressed with my first Ikea candle.

Trapp White Fir
(single wick) Brad's mom gave us this for Christmas. I burned it immediately. This candle made the whole house smell awesome. It's a good holiday scent. I'm looking forward to trying more Trap candles.

Totals:
#100daysofempties totals: I've completed 21 products in 33 days.
#oneemptyonedollar totals: $5.04 remains in my beauty budget.

2014 Beauty Favorites

Happy 2015! I'm excited to bring you my annual favorites for a FIFTH year! It was neat to look back on my favorites from 2010, 2011, 2012, & 2013, then compare them with the products I've used (or continued using) this year.

(The products marked with - means it is a type of product that I do not use, or I just didn't find a miracle product for the year.)

These are all products I have used continuously throughout the year.  I have repurchased most of these or I will in the future.  I have recommended them to friends and family, and I recommend them to you.

Holiday Haul / Gift Ideas

Christmas tree with wrapped presents

I thought about posting this before Christmas, but I didn't want to give any spoilers for gifts of loved ones. I hope these gift ideas are helpful throughout the year or for next Christmas!

I can not rave enough about Amazon wishlist; they even have a toolbar button so you can add anything to your wishlist, not just Amazon items. I use this all year long and it's great for others to know exactly what you want for any occasion.

Holiday Haul

christmas gifts - makeup, Friends boxed set, kitten

A kitten was all I was really expecting but Brad gifted so much more! Brad gave me many things from my wishlist but a lot of thoughtful surprises, too:

(non-wishlist:)
Friends Completed Boxed Series  - I kept saying I wanted to watch Friends from beginning to end. I feel like there's always so many Friends references that I never understand. I figured I would just stream it, but now I have physical DVDs and no excuses.
Kitten - I have wanted a kitten for the longest time. We finally found a perfect match from New Beginnings Animal Rescue.
Waiter's Wine Opener - I've always found these intimidating at restaurants or parties. Now I have one to learn!
Wine Rack - I kept mentioning I wanted to build or buy a wine rack. I'm excited to finally have a home for bottles of wine.

new makeup

(pictured: wishlist beauty items, Winter Walmart Beauty Box, & December Pinchme Box)

(wishlist:)
BCBG Landon Floral Pants
• Beautyblender blendercleanser solid
• Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed in Moonstone
• Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette
• Sephora Favorites: Superstars
Urban Decay Naked On the Run Palette

sephora favorites

Sephora Favorites: Superstars had the highest priority on my wishlist. This is the ultimate gift for beauty lovers. This would be a great gift for someone transitioning from drugstore to high-end makeup, too. A few of these products I've already tried but the majority are new-to-me and I cannot wait to try. The Superstars gift set retailed at $75 and it included $225 worth of product - totally worth it! The products included are:

- Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in Dark Brown (full size)
- Benefit Cosmetics POREfessional (1/3 size)
- Benefit Cosmetics They're Real Mascara In Jet Black (deluxe sample)
- Bumble And Bumble Surf Spray (half size)
- Chloè by Chloè Rollerball
- Formula X Nail Color in Ignite (full size)
- Fresh Sugar Rosè Tinted Lip Treatment (deluxe sample)
- Josie Maran 100% Pure Argan Oil (deluxe sample)
- NARS Cosmetics Blush in Orgasm (full size)
- Smashbox Cosmetics Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 35 in Light (full size)
- Stila Cosmetics Stay All Day® Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner In Intense Black (full size)
- Urban Decay Eye Shadow in Sin (full size)

unwrapped Christmas presents

My parents got me:
• Candy
• Gift Cards
• Hue Boot Socks in Oxblood
• Lisa Frank Pen
Minnetonka Gray Three Layer Boots - (wishlist item) I bought the Minnetonka black ankle boots years ago and have worn them so much. These have been on my wishlist for the longest time. I'm so happy to have a pair of shoes that aren't black.
• Old Navy Fleece Pajamas
Purex Mini Casserole Dishes - (wishlist item) I love casseroles but they always produce so much food for just two people. I wanted these to cook half the casserole immediately and then freeze the half for dinner in a week or two.

My sisters got me:
• A kitchen towel: "Cat hair - both a condiment and a fashion accessory."
•  C.O. Bieglow Lemon Lip Balm - (wishlist item)

For the Man

When I asked Brad want he wanted, he told me 'screwdrivers and socks'. Brad uses Amazon wishlist, too - but he doesn't update it too often. Brad has been talking about an iPad forever but didn't really 'want' one...

Birchbox Man, iPad mini

I gave Brad an iPad mini. (There were plenty of deals Black Friday!) He hasn't put it down since.

I also gave Brad the 'Sweat the Small stuff' gift set from Bircbhox. Luckily, there were socks in here. (haha.) I've been wanting the KOR water bottle since last year. (Yes, I stole it back from him right after Christmas.) All the other stuff in the gift set is super nice, too! The gift set retailed at $54 and has $110 worth of products! The gift set included:

-Bálla for Men Body Spray
-Baxter of California Deodorant
-Bombas Ankle Socks
-Bombas Calf Socks
-KOR Aura Water Bottle
-Quirky Wrapster
-Under Armour Trance Sackpack

tools

My parents got Brad a complete screwdriver set and a carwash set (not pictured.)

The Gift Card Debate

gift cards

Personally, I love gift cards - they're essentially cash to use at your favorite store. However, I know some people think they're impersonal or lazy.

Tips: If you don't know where the recipient shops, go with a gas card or a gift card to your local grocery store. Add a personal item to go with the gift card - like a DIY project, your favorite candle, or your favorite food.

Christmas gift basket

Brad's mom gave us gift cards in a super cute basket filled with food, a candle, kitchen items, and personal ornaments. We can't wait to use the gift cards but trying out so many new foods and items has been so neat, too!

Gift Ideas:

For the Beauty Experienced: I got my mom and Brad's mom a beautyblender. The beautyblender has so many good reviews of people stating the way it changed their makeup routine. I figured both of our moms have been using regular makeup sponges for years - why not give them a new tool?

For the Beauty Lover: Sephora Gift Sets (mentioned above)

For the Man: Sweat the Small Stuff Gift Set (mentioned above)

makeup for beginners or a teenager

For the Preteen or Friend: a makeup kit. My youngest sister has started to get into makeup. (She even knows how to apply it - she watches as many YouTube tutorials as me.) I made her a "makeup starter kit." This would be a great idea for a friend too - give them some of your current favorite products or stuff they occasionally 'borrow' from you!

For the Teenager: techie gifts or eyeshadow palettes. I gave my younger sister an iPad cover. She really liked mine, so I got her a similar one. I also gave her the Coastal Scents Revealed palette. She wears very minimal makeup. With so many saying this is a dupe for Urban Decay's Naked palettes (my favorites), I figured it would be a great way to introduce her to more eyeshadow and create multiple looks.

For the Wino: waiter's wine opener / wine rack / wine saver  (mentioned above)

beauty favorites & Bear Naked Granola

Surprisingly, I didn't purchase any new beauty products this month. I received a TON of makeup around Christmas, but it doesn't feel right calling them monthly favorites when I only used them for a week.

Bear Naked Maple-icious Pecan Granola
I purchased this on a whim and it has become my new favorite. I'm already on my second bag within less than a month. I've been eating it with yogurt and fruit for lunch, with oatmeal for breakfast, and I'm looking into making my own granola bars with it.

Kat Von D Tattoo Liner
(sample) This has been in the bottom of my makeup drawer for forever; I'm not very good with liquid eyeliner but this makes application super easy.

Jordana Best Lash Extreme Volumizing Mascara
Nouveau Cheap raved about this mascara a few times. I decided to try it out for under $3.00. I'm impressed. It gives big, volumized lashes and doesn't flake too bad. (Although avoid wearing when baking - I felt my lashes melting getting something out of the oven...)

Laura Geller GlamLASH Mascara
I picked this when I built my own Birchbox in SoHo. This mascara has gotten a lot better with age. The formula has thickened up and makes my lashes look more volumized. I really like the wand, too.

beauty empties

Anastasia Brow Wiz in Caramel
Lately, this is my HG brow pencil; I have a few back-ups already but I am on the hunt for a cheaper alternative.

Bath & Body Works Country Chic Shower Gel
(travel size) This was a freebie, it smelled okay. I probably won't purchase it.

Bath & Body Works Pomegranate Lemon Shower Gel
(travel size) Loved this scent! Like all good things, it was limited edition.

Bath & Body Works White Barn Cranberry Woods 3-Wick Scented Candle
Loved this scent! It didn't burn evenly though for some reason. I will repurchase next year.

Benefit They're Real! Mascara (2)
(sample size) I really liked these for volumizing and layering with other mascaras. I had one in my vanity and one in my purse. I have quite a few back-ups.

The Body Shop Coconut Body Butter
Didn't really care for this. I prefer the Shea Body Butter or Organic Coconut Oil. I won't repurchase.

Clinque Take the Day off makeup remover
This is my HG remover; I have a few back-ups.

Dove Sensitive Skin Beauty Bar Bar Soap
This is my HG soap; I have a few back-ups.

Dr. Lipp original nipple balm for lips
(sample) This is so sticky. It works but it's not fun to use. I bought a full size awhile ago and now I have quite a few samples. I prefer Aquaphor over this.

J.R. Watkins Foot Repair Salve
I really liked the smell and feel of this but I didn't notice a major difference; I probably won't repurchase.

Laneige BB Cushion SPF 50+ Puff & Light
(sample) I received this in my Target Beauty Box. I did not like this at all. Generally, I don't wear foundation. This reeked of sunscreen and didn't even cover my redness.

LUSH Ocean Salt Face & Body Scrub
This is my HG face scrub; I'm already working on a new tub.

Maybelline The Rocket Volum' Express Mascara
This was my HG mascara; I'm not currently using it but I do have a few back-ups.

Miracle Skin Transformer Miracle Mud Skin Restoring Treatment Mask
(sample) I received this in my Birchbox. I wasn't a big fan. It was super messy, felt gross, and I didn't really see any difference in my skin.

N. 4 Super Comb Prep & Protect Spray
(sample) I received this in my Birchbox. I liked it. The scent was too vanilla for my liking but it did a good job at detangling.

Neutrogena Makeup Removing Cleansing Towelettes 25 ct (2)
These are my HG wipes; I already have a few back-ups.

Satin Dry Skin Shave Gel
(travel size) This lathered nicely but I didn't notice any difference in my skin.

Secret Clear Gel Outlast Unscented Deodorant
I'm not a fan of gels; I won't be repurchasing.

Skintimate Lotionized Moisturizing Shave Gel
(travel size) This lathered nicely but I didn't notice any difference in my skin.

Skintimate Lotionized Moisturizing Shave Gel  for Dry Skin
This was my HG shaving gel but lately, I haven't been using it. I have a few back-ups.

Soap & Glory The Righteous Butter Body Butter
I love this scent, it's pretty moisturizing and lingers all day. I might repurchase although I just prefer Coconut Oil.

Sure Regular Scent Invisible Solid Deodorant (2)
I used this cheapie deodorant for awhile but it has messed up a lot of my clothes. I've switched to something else. I might repurchase.

Up & Up Cotton Rounds 100 ct (2)
These are just a necessary staple.

Venus & Olay Razor Cartridges (2)
These are my HG razors; I already have a few back-ups.

Rimmel Show Off Lip Lacquer in Comet

I got this in a lighter color about a year ago. I liked the formula but didn't love the color. Recently, I saw the shade 'comet' at CVS for 50% plus I had a $1 off Rimmel coupon. (I paid about $2.00 for it, which makes me love it even more.) The applicator is awesome. I feel like the color suits me well. I've been wearing this almost every day.

Nuxe Reve De Miel Lip Balm (Pot & Stick)
I bought the pot form nearly a year ago. It's one of my favorite lip balms but using it in public just doesn't seem very hygienic. I was a few dollars away from free shipping on Amazon and decided to finally buy the stick. It doesn't leave a white cast, it tastes nice, and it's pretty moisturizing.

Vasanti BrightenUp! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator
I got this in my Birchbox and have been using it weekly in the shower. I've been loving all face scrubs with microbeads, it just seems like a deeper cleaning and not abrasive. This one doesn't disappoint!

Himalayan salt lamp

Himalayan Salt Lamp

Long story short, I accidentally broke our bathroom lamp. It was from Ikea (we don't have an Ikea in Memphis - yet!) Not to mention, the $20 lamp is now sold out and is selling for nearly $80 on eBay. Umm, no thanks! I've been wanting a salt lamp for a few months but I couldn't think of a good place to put one. I guess it was a happy accident; I finally got a salt map! (This one, to be exact.) Salt lamps have a ton of benefits but I mostly just like how cool it looks. Plus, this one has a dimmer and has been making an awesome night light too!

Beautyblender
I was lucky enough to have received the beautyblender in one of my first Birchboxes a few years ago. I used it on and off for awhile; it's been in my makeup drawer for a few months. Recently, I fell in love with this tool all over again. It blends concealer and illuminating products so effortlessly!

Benefit Gimme Brow in Light/Medium
I've never been a fan of tinted brow gels. Birchbox x Benefit sent me this and I decided to give it a try. I've been liking this on days I don't have a ton of time to do my makeup and just want a bit more brow definition.

Caudalie Vinosource Moisturizing Sorbet
My skin has been so dry lately with the cold weather coming in. I've been shopping my stash and trying to use up a lot of my skincare samples.  This smells awesome and has a great texture.

ELF Studio Blush Palette
I was wanting some new blushes without paying a lot. I remembered emilynoel83 reviewing these blushes, so I decided to give them a try. I got both the light and dark palettes. These palettes are cool because you can easily remove the pans from the palette and make it custom to your needs. (Two blushes from the light palette and two from the dark palette are pictured.) All of the blushes are super pigmented and have great staying power.

Jordana Easyliner for Eyes & Easyliner for Lips
I've raved about these multiple times. Through the entire month of October, Walgreens had Jordana cosmetics for 40% off; some of the colors were being discontinued and were only .59 cents a piece. I bought a few more shades that I didn't already own. These are such a good value. Best of all, they're twistable - you never have to sharpen them.

Paula's Choice Skin Recovery Super Antioxidant Concentrate Serum
I received this in my October Birchbox and started using it immediately. It's definitely helped with redness and dry skin patches. I'm contemplating purchasing the full size.

Empties #5

beauty empties

Onto another round of empties! The top picture is from my normal empties box and the bottom picture is products are I used/finished up on a cruise.

Anastasia Brow Wiz in Caramel
This has become my favorite brow pencil. On the downside, it's pretty pricey and I'm going through them super fast. I already have a few backups.

Bath & Body Works Shea It isn't So Foot Cream
(travel size) This used to be my all-time favorite foot cream. Recently, I've just found it too greasy and I've been trying out other brands. I might repurchase in the future.

Beauty Protector Hair Mask
(2 samples) I got these in my Birchbox. I wasn't that impressed with these. They smell nice but didn't do much for my hair. I won't be purchasing the full size.

The Body Shop Shea Body Butter
(travel size) I've been wanting to try body butters from The Body Shop for a while. When they had 40% off plus free shipping, I purchased both the Shea and the Coconut butters. I definitely preferred the Shea. It smells awesome and it was pretty moisturizing. I will probably repurchase the Shea butter when I finish up some other lotions.

CeraVe Renewing SA Cream
This smelled so medicine-y and sort of worked, but I didn't notice any difference over the long run. I won't be repurchasing.

Clinique Take the Day Off Makeup Remover for lids, lashes, & lips
This is my HG makeup remover; I won't continue to rave. I already have a few backups.

Crest 3D White Radiant Mint Toothpaste
(travel size) This was the only travel size 3D white option, I didn't really care for the flavor. I prefer 'Vibrant Mint.' I probably won't repurchase this flavor.

Dove Sensitive Skin Beauty Bar Bar Soap
This is my HG soap; I won't continue to rave. I already have a few backups.

Gillette Venus & Olay Refill Cartridges (3)
This is my HG razor; I won't continue to rave. I already have a few backups.

INM Out the Door Top Coat
This was a decent top coat, I heard it was similar to Seche Vite without all the chemicals. Unfortunately, I prefer Seche Vite over this. I might repurchase.

Johnson's Baby Oil Gel
I love to use this on dry flaky skin (like sunburn peel, for example) right out of the shower. It really moisturizes. I'm already working on a new bottle.

LUSH Ocean Salt Face and Body Scrub
This is my HG face scrub; I won't continue to rave. I'm already working on a new tub...

LUSH The Olive Branch Shower Gel
This smelled nice and lathered awesome but the consistency turned water-thin super fast. It's kind of pricey. I might repurchase it in the future.

Maybelline Fit Me shine-free Foundation in Porcelain
I used this more like a concealer for spot treatment. I liked how it dried to almost a powder finish and was really easy to apply. Unfortunately, the lid cracked and the product dried up near the end. I probably won't repurchase.

Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Dark Circle Eraser - Brightener
MakeupbyTiffanyD raved about this product a few times. I've used the concealer for years so I decided to try out the brightener. I didn't see any noticeable changes; I won't be repurchasing the brightener and I'll continue to stick the concealer.

Neutrogena makeup remover cleansing towelettes (25 ct)
These are my HG face wipes; I won't continue to rave. I already have a few backups.

Nugg Face Mask Flaxseed & Peppermint
I received this in my Birchbox. It smelled nice and made my skin feel soft right out of the shower. Otherwise, I didn't notice any major changes. I won't be purchasing.

Olay Regenerist Micro-Exfoliating Wet Cleansing Cloths
These are my old HG face wipes; I won't continue to rave. I will probably repurchase if I can find the black packaging again.

Organix Sea Mineral Moisture Shampoo
I liked the unique scent of this. But halfway through the bottle, I just grew tired of it. I think it really stripped the color from my hair too. I won't be repurchasing.

Peter Thomas Roth Mega-Rich Body Wash
(travel size) The citrus scent was really refreshing and a nice pick-me-up. It lathered nicely, too. Although it's a little too pricey for me, I probably won't purchase the full size.

Sephora Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover
(sample) This didn't work well removing mascara. I won't be purchasing the full size.

Skintimate Skin Therapy Moisturizing Lotionized Dry Skin Shave Gel
This is my HG shaving cream; I won't continue to rave. I already have a few backups.

Up & Up Cotton Rounds (100 ct)
Cotton rounds are a necessary staple for me. Currently, I have a bulk supply of Swiss cotton rounds, but I would repurchase the Up & Up ones in the future.

Up & Up Ibuprofen
I'm not sure why this ended up in the picture on the cruise. Regardless, I've already repurchased.

Vaseline Lip Therapy
My dermatologist recommended this when I asked for a lip remedy. I didn't notice any difference in my lips and didn't care for the scent/taste. I won't be repurchasing.

Benefit Hoola Bronzer*
I originally got this as a deluxe sample perk from Sephora; I've been loving it to add some color to my pale face. I think it would be great for all skin tones. I've always heard so much hype about this product but it was a little too pricey for me and I was happy with my drugstore bronzers. Luckily, I won a full-sized bronzer for when I finish up this sample. (Thank you Benefit x Birchbox!)

Jordana Easyliner for Lips in Rock N' Rose
This is an oldy but goody. Recently, I've been just wearing this as an all-over lip color and topping it with a balm or gloss. It's a great shade!

Macadamia Healing Oil Spray
This is definitely in my top five favorite Birchbox samples. I've been using the Macadamia mask for years, so I was super excited to try this. (I chose it in September's Birchbox choice.)  My hair has been so soft lately and I think it's a combination of using the Macadamia mask, MoroccanOil on damp hair, and using this healing oil spray on the ends of my dry hair. The smell was a little overpowering at first but I've grown to like it.

Birchbox Soho

Visiting the newly opened Birchbox SoHo Store was a life-favorite for me this month. I've been a huge Birchbox fan for over three years, so visiting the store was pretty much the only thing on my to-do list while in New York. In the store, products were organized by type, not brand - which makes it so much more convenient. I got to build my own Birchbox and purchase a few items I've been eyeing for awhile with a fun and helpful staff.

cross ring and peplum top

(nails: Ruffian Naked, criss-cross ring, BCBG Scarlet peplum top)

I've been loving nude nails again. Nude nail polish goes with everything, makes your fingers look longer and skinnier, and chips aren't nearly as noticeable - score!

Lately, I've been loving all things oxblood/burgundy. Every item of clothing I see in this color I end up wanting. This is such a flattering color for pale skin and dark hair. On the plus side, I'm stepping away from black and adding some color to my closet.

Milani Eye Tech Liquid Eyeliner
Black eyeliner hasn't been part of my routine in years. But lately, I've been admiring winged/cat eye looks and tutorials. The flashy "NEW" writing on this product and the fact I had some CVS Extrabucks to burn encouraged me to purchase this on a whim. It's so easy to use and comes off clean, too.  The compact size was great for vacationing/traveling.

OPI Nail Polish in Coca-Cola Red
I saw this in a magazine advertisement and immediately purchased it on eBay; I've been wearing it constantly since it arrived. It's a perfect red, exactly like a Coca-Cola can. The formula is great, as always.

Suave Moroccan Infusion Dry Shampoo
I used the Suave Moroccan Shampoo (not a huge fan). However, I did the like the smell. For only $3, I decided to give this a try. It works just as good as some of my high-end dry shampoos. Not only is good for hiding oily roots, but works pretty good on clean hair to add texture and boost waves.

Empties #4

Almay Makeup Eraser Sticks
I've purchased these for years and have a few back-ups on hand. They're a quick fix when you make a mess of your mascara or eyeliner. (Makeup remover and a q-tip would do the trick too but these are great for on-the-go.)

Bath & Body Works White Citrus Shower Gel
(travel size) I'm always drawn to clean or citrus scents - this is a little of both; it's super refreshing and wakes you up in the morning. I will probably repurchase.

Beauty Protection Protect & Detangle Leave-In Conditioner
(Birchbox sample) This was great at moisturizing and detangling; I just didn't care for the scent - it's a very strong vanilla scent. I probably won't purchase this in full-size.

Dove Sensitive Skin Beauty Bar
My doctor recommended to use this bar soap on more sensitive areas. It lathers really nicely and is scentless. My skin has responded well to it. I have a few back-ups on hand, but I'll repurchase when I need to.

equate Oil Free Eve Makeup Remover
(comparable to Neutrogena) I usually don't go for generic items but this was on sale and about half the cost of Neutrogena; I decided to try it out for around $3. It was a little bit more oily than Neutrogena, but it's definitely comparable. I'm not sure if I'll repurchase; I prefer Clinique and coconut oil lately.

L'Oreal Voluminous Miss Manga Mascara
The wand on this mascara was super cool - it bends in all directions. However, it didn't provide more volume than Maybelline The Rocket. I won't be repurchasing.

Maybelline Pumped Up Colossal Volum' Express Mascara
This was just an okay mascara - not good, not bad. I won't be repurchasing.

Maybelline The Rocket Volum' Express Mascara
I've raved about this over and over, it's my favorite mascara. I will continue to repurchase.

MoroccanOil MoroccanOil Treatment
This is the only hair product I really use anymore. I use two pumps on wet hair to moisturize and about half a pump on dry hair to tame frizz and add shine. I've already repurchased another bottle.

Ms. Manicure Strike to Smooth mini emery boards
These mini nail files were great for on-the-go. They take up little space in your purse or travel bag. I prefer glass nail files now, so I don't plan on repurchasing these.

Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes
The are the most effective makeup removing wipes I've tried that don't irritate my skin (aside from the black packaging Olay Regenerist Wipes.) But they're not super great with mascara. I've already repurchased these in bulk.

Revlon Photoready Powder in Fair/Light
It has taken me about two years to finish this powder. (Actually, it finally broke when it was a super thin ring.) I used it just for setting concealer and it did the job. I might repurchase this in the future.

Skintimate Dry Skin Shaving Gel
This shaving cream is moisturizing and doesn't have an overwhelming smell. I have a few back-ups and I will repurchase it in the future.

Suave Moroccan Infusion Shine Conditioner
I picked up a cheap conditioner to leave at Brad's house. This smells great and left my hair pretty soft. It doesn't have any Moroccan oil in it though. It doesn't compare to my beloved Joico K-Pak; I won't be repurchasing.

up & up cotton rounds (2)
Cotton rounds are an essential for me. I go through them super fast, which is why I already repurchased in bulk.

Vitafusion Women's Complete Multivitamin (150 count)
I've discussed these in a previous empties post; I already repurchased an even larger bottle.

Venus & Olay Razor Cartridge (2)
These are my favorite razor... multiple blades, a shave bar, and a moisturizing bar leaves my skin super smooth. I've already repurchased them in bulk.

July Favorites

'Favorites' posts/videos discuss the products (and other misc things) you loved for that month. The products can either be purchased that month or (old) 'rediscovered' items. Favorites are published at the end of the current month or at the beginning of the following month.

beauty & food favorites

This month, I've rediscovered a lot of old favorites that I always mention in previous posts but haven't used in awhile:

Maybelline The Rocket Volum' Express Mascara is awesome for long and thick but clump-free lashes.

LUSH Sex Bomb Bath Bomb smells heavenly and leaves the bath water pink.

Glass nail files are the only way to go to avoid breakage and get smooth edges with minimal effort. I've used the Sephora Glass nail file for nearly two years but I wanted more to keep everywhere - my car, purse, and travel bag; these were a great find.

This month, I also have a few "random favorites":

Larabars - I first discovered these about two years ago in one of my very first Birchboxes. Kroger constantly has these on sale for 10/$10 so I've slowly been trying all of the flavors. The bars are great for a light meal or snack on-the-go. They're made from whole foods and have pure and simple ingredients - not to mention, they're extremely flavorful!

Kashi GoLean Crisp! Toasted Berry Crumble Cereal - I'm slowly but surely cutting all dairy from my diet. Finding a cereal that tastes amazing with almond milk has taken forever. I've finally found the perfect combination - it reminds me a little bit of Cap'n Crunch Berries cereal... but more healthy, of course.

Polarized Sunglasses - My eyes are pretty sensitive. I'm never outside without sunglasses. Even on those cloudy-but-bright days, I'm the weirdo wearing sunglasses. Recently, I made the switch to polarized sunglasses and I don't think I'll ever be turning back. The glare is cut and colors are so much more vivid; it's a little easier to see.
